Jeff Hornacek began his basketball career at Iowa State, joining the team as a walk-on and earning a scholarship through his performance. Hornacek set the school record for career assists and was named to the All-Big Eight first team as a senior. He was selected as the 46th overall pick in the NBA Draft by the Phoenix Suns, marking the start of his professional basketball journey.
Hornacek played six seasons with the Suns, earning NBA All-Star honors and averaging a career-high 20.1 points in his final season with the team. Alongside Tom Chambers and Kevin Johnson, he helped lead Phoenix to four consecutive NBA playoff appearances, including two Western Conference Finals. Hornacek was later traded to the Philadelphia 76ers as part of the deal that brought Charles Barkley to Phoenix. After a season and a half with Philadelphia, he was traded to the Utah Jazz, a move that proved pivotal for both Hornacek and the Jazz franchise.
During his seven seasons with Utah, Hornacek averaged 14.4 points and teamed with John Stockton to form a backcourt that contributed to back-to-back Western Conference Championships. He set an NBA record with eight consecutive three-pointers in a single game against Seattle and tied another NBA record with 11 consecutive three-pointers across multiple games. Hornacek won the AT&T Three-Point Shootout twice and ranks among the NBA's all-time leaders in free throw percentage. He is the Jazz franchise leader in both free throw percentage and three-point percentage, and his No. 14 jersey was retired by the team. Hornacek played a key role in helping Utah reach the NBA Finals.
Following his playing career, Hornacek transitioned into coaching, initially joining the Jazz as a special assistant coach focused on shooting development. He advanced to a full assistant role before becoming head coach of the Phoenix Suns, where he led the team to a 48-34 record and a 23-win improvement over the previous season. Hornacek was runner-up for the NBA Coach of the Year award and became one of only three individuals in league history to be named both Player and Coach of the Month. He later served as head coach of the New York Knicks and returned to Utah as a coaching consultant. Hornacek's experience as both a record-setting NBA player and coach provides valuable insight into basketball strategy, player development, and shooting expertise.
