Jeff Hiller

Jeff Hiller is an actor, comedian, and improviser known for his work in television, theater, and improv comedy. Hiller began his studies at Texas Lutheran University with the intention of becoming a pastor, completing theology coursework before earning a bachelor's degree in theater. Prior to moving to New York, he worked as a social worker in Denver, Colorado, focusing on homeless youth and HIV prevention. Hiller's passion for performance led him to the Upright Citizens Brigade, where he became a core member, created improvised musicals with Baby Wants Candy, and founded the all-gay improv troupe Neely O'Hara.

Hiller's stage credits include originating the role of John Quincy Adams in "Bloody, Bloody Andrew Jackson" at the Public Theatre and on Broadway. Off-Broadway, he originated the role of the Lamb in "Silence!" — the musical adaptation of "Silence of the Lambs" — and later took over "Bright Colors, Bold Patterns." He also performed in Shakespeare in the Park productions of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and "Love's Labour's Lost," and appeared in City Center Encores with "Lady, Be Good!"

On television, Hiller has appeared in series such as "Guiding Light," "Ugly Betty," "30 Rock," "Law & Order: Criminal Intent," "Psych," "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt," and "Community." He was a regular on Ali Wentworth's series "Nightcap" and appeared in the third season of "Playing House." His performance in "Pluribus" earned him an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series.

Hiller gained widespread recognition for his role as Joel in the HBO series "Somebody Somewhere," which explores themes of connection, found family, and LGBTQ+ representation. He received an Emmy Award for his performance and was previously nominated at the Independent Spirit Awards for best supporting performance in a new scripted series. Hiller was also part of the "Somebody Somewhere" team that received the Peabody Award.

In addition to his acting career, Hiller authored the memoir "Actress of a Certain Age: My Twenty-Year Trail to Overnight Success." He appeared as Mr. McQueen in a revival of "Urinetown," served as a panelist on NPR's "Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me!," and was interviewed by Terry Gross on "Fresh Air." Hiller has spoken publicly about living with morphea, a medical condition that causes hair loss and other dermatological changes, a personal experience reflected in his character Joel on "Somebody Somewhere." Hiller is recognized for bringing authenticity and vulnerability to his performances across stage, screen, and written work.
