
Jean-Claude Biver is a Luxembourg-born Swiss watchmaker, executive, and entrepreneur recognized for his influence in the Swiss watchmaking industry. Biver is known for revitalizing historic luxury watch brands and introducing innovations in haute horlogerie over a career spanning more than five decades.
Educated at the University of Lausanne, where he earned a diploma from HEC Lausanne business school, Biver began his professional journey at Audemars Piguet, training across various departments before specializing in sales and marketing for Europe. His time in the Joux Valley, a region central to fine watchmaking, had a significant impact on his career.
Biver's first major industry achievement came when he co-acquired the dormant Blancpain brand. In partnership, he focused on mechanical complications during the quartz crisis, leading the company to produce six notable haute horology pieces in its first decade and achieving an annual turnover of 50 million Swiss francs by the time it was sold to Swatch Group. The motto he crafted — "Since 1735 there has never been a quartz Blancpain watch. And there never will be" — became a rallying point for the revival of mechanical watches. Biver played a key role in the renaissance of the mechanical wristwatch, which was widely considered obsolete at the time.
After the sale of Blancpain, Biver was tasked with revitalizing Omega at Swatch Group, focusing on product placement and celebrity endorsements. He replaced Rolex and Seiko in the James Bond films and worked with celebrities such as Cindy Crawford and Formula One driver Michael Schumacher to elevate the brand's prestige. Biver was among the first in the luxury watch industry to leverage influencer marketing and strategic product placement.
As CEO of Hublot, Biver introduced the concept of "The Art of Fusion," building on the brand's history of combining materials such as gold and rubber. He launched the "Big Bang" chronograph at BaselWorld, which achieved immediate success. Hublot was later acquired by LVMH following significant sales growth. Biver also introduced Hublot as the Official Timekeeper of FIFA and Formula One, expanding the brand's international exposure. He established a foundry to produce Magic Gold, a scratch-resistant 18-carat gold developed with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne. Biver was later appointed head of the watches and jewelry division at LVMH, overseeing brands including TAG Heuer, Zenith, and Hublot.
Biver's contributions to the watchmaking industry have been recognized with several honors, including a Doctor Honoris Causa from Business School Lausanne, the Gaïa prize in the Esprit d'Entreprise category, the Special Jury Prize at the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève, and the Red Dot: Personality Prize. His leadership has been credited with helping to preserve the Swiss watch industry during the quartz movement era.
Biver is chairman of JC Biver, his own luxury watch manufacture based in Givrins, Switzerland, which he launched with his son Pierre Biver.
