Jean Eric Salata

Jean Eric Salata is a private equity investor recognized for his influence in Asia's financial sector. Salata holds a Bachelor of Science with honors in finance and economics from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. After graduation, he joined Bain & Company in Boston before relocating to Hong Kong, where he advised foreign companies on entry strategies into Mainland China. Prior to founding Baring Private Equity Asia, Salata served as director at AIG Global Investment Corporation (Asia) Ltd., the Asian private equity investment arm of AIG, and as executive vice president of finance at Shiu Wing Steel, a Hong Kong-based industrial company.

Salata established Baring Private Equity Asia, known as BPEA, leading its development into a major private markets firm in Asia. Despite early challenges, including changes in founding partners and reduced seed commitments, Salata built a team and invested in companies such as NetEase and Mphasis. These investments enabled BPEA to raise $300 million for its first fund. Salata and his team later completed a management buyout, making the firm independent. Under his leadership, BPEA achieved significant fundraising milestones, including the closure of Fund II at $257 million, Fund III at $490 million, and Fund VI at $3.99 billion. The firm’s total committed capital exceeded $18 billion across its series of funds, with Fund VII closing at $6.5 billion.

Over more than three decades in Hong Kong, Salata oversaw BPEA’s growth from a small firm to a business managing $20 billion. BPEA developed an operational approach focused on sectors such as healthcare, logistics, media, education, financial services, and retail. Notable investments include Nord Anglia, St. Georges University, HCP, and Hexaware Technologies. The firm received industry recognition, including the "Large Cap Firm of the Year in Asia" by Private Equity International and "Fundraising of the Year – Large Cap" by Asian Venture Capital Journal. Salata was named "PE Professional of the Year" by Asian Venture Capital Journal.

Salata sold Baring Private Equity Asia to EQT in a transaction valued at approximately $6.7 billion. Following the merger, he became chair of EQT Asia, overseeing private capital, infrastructure, and real estate, and joined EQT’s executive committee. EQT Asia has deployed more than $35 billion of equity in over 180 transactions and raised some of the largest funds in the region.

In addition to his investment career, Salata is active in philanthropy and sustainability. He and his wife donated $200 million to establish the Salata Institute for Climate and Sustainability at Harvard University and contributed $5 million to Cathedral Preparatory School for the Salata Technology and Innovation Center. Salata’s career reflects experience in entrepreneurship, private equity, and long-term value creation in global markets.
