Jay Ingram

Jay Ingram, CM, is a Canadian science communicator known for his work in science broadcasting, writing, and public education. Ingram hosted the science program "Quirks and Quarks" on CBC Radio One, succeeding David Suzuki, and remained with the show for more than a decade. During this period, Ingram received two ACTRA Awards and a Centre for Investigative Journalism Award. He later hosted "The Talk Show," a CBC Radio series focused on language, earning the Science in Society Journalism Award.

Ingram served as co-host of Discovery Channel's science show "Daily Planet" for 16 years, contributing to the program's development and format. The show delivered science and nature news to audiences in Canada and internationally. Ingram also worked with the Public Health Agency of Canada as ambassador and spokesperson for its national dementia awareness campaign, aimed at reducing stigma around dementia.

As an author, Ingram has written 17 books, with three earning Canadian Science Writers' Awards and several appearing on bestseller lists. His works, translated into 15 languages, include "Talk, Talk, Talk: Decoding the Mysteries of Speech," "The Science of Everyday Life," "The Velocity of Honey: And More Science of Everyday Life," and "The Burning House: Unlocking the Mysteries of the Brain." "Theatre of the Mind: Pulling Back the Curtain on Consciousness" was selected as one of The Globe and Mail's Top 100 books. "The End of Memory: A Natural History of Aging and Alzheimer's" was published by St. Martin's Press.

Ingram chaired the Science Communications Program at Banff Centre, promoting science writing, broadcasting, and social media. He is also co-founder of Beakerhead, an arts and engineering event in Calgary, Alberta, and hosts the podcast "Anthropomania." Ingram has contributed to the development of science journalism and public science literacy in Canada.

His work has been recognized with the Sandford Fleming Medal from the Royal Canadian Institute, the Royal Society of Canada's McNeil Medal for the Public Awareness of Science, and the Michael Smith Award for Science Promotion from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. Ingram also received the Walter C. Alvarez Award for medical writing from the American Medical Writers Association. He was named a Member of the Order of Canada for his contributions to science communication and was awarded a Doctor of Science, honoris causa, from the University of Western Ontario.
