Janeese Lewis George

Janeese Lewis George began her political career as a member of the Council of the District of Columbia from Ward 4, stepping into her role on January 2, 2021. She carries the distinction of being the first self-identified democratic socialist to serve on the Council since 1998. Her political journey continued as she announced her candidacy for mayor of the District of Columbia in the 2026 election on December 1, 2025.

Throughout her council campaign, George received endorsements from notable progressive groups, including Black Lives Matter, the Working Families Party, and the Democratic Socialists of America. These endorsements not only reflect her alignment with progressive ideologies but also her ability to mobilize and engage diverse constituencies. Her campaign was further bolstered by her fundraising success, as she was the first candidate to reach the limit on matching funds through the District's public financing program, which caps donations at $50 per supporter.
