Jane Wurwand

Jane Wurwand is an entrepreneur and skincare industry leader known as the co-founder and chief visionary of Dermalogica and The International Dermal Institute. A UK-trained skin therapist, Wurwand arrived in the United States and identified a gap in continuing education for skin therapy professionals. She opened a classroom in Marina del Rey, California, under the name The International Dermal Institute, offering postgraduate training to licensed skin therapists to enhance their competitiveness in the skincare business.

Wurwand founded Dermalogica at age 28, initially bootstrapping the company with $14,000. Motivated by her personal experience with dermatitis and chronic eczema, she developed skincare products free of common irritants such as lanolin, SD alcohol, mineral oil, artificial colors, and fragrances.

Under Wurwand's leadership, Dermalogica expanded into a global skincare brand, distributing products in more than 100 countries and operating 35 concept spaces. The company established hybrid learning centers worldwide, integrating consumer and professional education, professional treatments, and retail sales. Dermalogica was acquired by Unilever, solidifying its position as a leading professional skincare company. The Sunday Times once described Wurwand as "the woman who started a cult," referencing the dedicated following she built through her commitment to skin health over superficial beauty ideals.

Beyond her work in skincare, Wurwand has focused on advancing women's economic empowerment. She launched Financial Independence Through Entrepreneurship (FITE), partnering with Kiva to provide small loans to women entrepreneurs in more than 68 countries. Through FITE, Dermalogica has created vocational training programs and facilitated more than 75,000 loans for women to start or grow businesses. Wurwand has addressed the United Nations as a keynote speaker on the FITE mission and the role of business in empowering women. She was appointed a Presidential Ambassador for Global Entrepreneurship, working with the federal government to support the development of future entrepreneurs.

Wurwand's philanthropic efforts include the Wurwand Foundation, a private family foundation in Los Angeles. Its signature initiative, FOUND/LA, supports local entrepreneurs by providing funding, mentorship, incubator programs, and educational resources to business owners underserved by traditional systems.

Wurwand is the author of the book "Skin in the Game: Everything You Need is Already Inside You," which explores her approach to entrepreneurship and the beauty industry. Her expertise on entrepreneurship and skincare is frequently featured by media outlets including Bloomberg, MSNBC, Inc., Entrepreneur, Sky News, People magazine, and NPR's "How I Built This" podcast.

Wurwand has received numerous honors, including CEO/Business Owner of the Year by Los Angeles Business Journal, the CEW Achiever Award, the Legend of Beauty Award by Beauty Industry West, and the Lifetime Achiever Award by CEW. She was made a Fellow of the City and Guilds of London Institute, one of only 500 in the Master Guild's history, and was named to Forbes' "50 Over 50" list of influential business, lifestyle, and entrepreneur leaders.
