Jamie Moyer

Jamie Moyer is known in Major League Baseball as a left-handed pitcher who built a lengthy and unconventional career. Moyer pitched for 25 seasons across four decades, playing for the Chicago Cubs, Texas Rangers, St. Louis Cardinals, Baltimore Orioles, Boston Red Sox, Seattle Mariners, Philadelphia Phillies, and Colorado Rockies. Unlike many pitchers who rely on high velocity, Moyer's average fastball speed in his final season was about 80 mph, making him one of the slowest non-knuckleball pitchers in the league. He relied on control and pitch variety, utilizing a sinker, cut fastball, slider, changeup, and curveball.

Moyer's career reached new heights with the Seattle Mariners, where he became a key part of the rotation. He played 11 seasons with the Mariners, compiling a record of 145–87, and leads the franchise in wins, innings pitched, starts, and quality starts. Moyer is the only Mariners pitcher to have won 20 games more than once, achieving 20–6 and 21–7 records. He finished in the top six of Cy Young Award voting three times and made an All-Star appearance. Moyer was named Seattle Pitcher of the Year and received the Roberto Clemente Award, Hutch Award, and Lou Gehrig Award, all recognizing his contributions on and off the field.

In the later stages of his career, Moyer continued to set records. At age 45, he won 16 games with the Philadelphia Phillies as the team secured a World Series title. After undergoing Tommy John surgery, he returned to pitch for the Colorado Rockies. At 49 years and 150 days old, Moyer became the oldest pitcher to record a win in Major League Baseball, breaking a longstanding record. He later broke his own record and set the mark for the oldest MLB player to record a run batted in. Moyer finished his career with 269 wins, ranking number 35 on the all-time list.

Off the field, Moyer and his wife Karen established The Moyer Foundation, which provides support to children affected by loss and family addiction. The foundation created Camp Erin for youth and families impacted by grief and Camp Mariposa, an addiction prevention and mentoring camp for children affected by a family member's substance use disorder. The Moyer Foundation was later rebranded as Eluna. Moyer authored the memoir "Just Tell Me I Can't: How Jamie Moyer Defied the Radar Gun and Defeated Time," sharing insights into his approach to pitching and perseverance. He was inducted into the Mariners Hall of Fame, highlighting a career defined by intelligence, adaptability, and longevity in professional baseball.
