James Moll

James Moll is an American documentary filmmaker whose work explores significant historical and cultural subjects. A graduate of the USC School of Cinematic Arts, Moll began his career as an intern reading scripts for film producer Lauren Shuler Donner and later worked as an assistant to French writer-director Francis Veber on the American remake of "Les Fugitifs," titled "Three Fugitives." Moll founded Allentown Productions Inc., a production company based at Universal Studios, where he focused on producing non-fiction film and television projects.

Moll is known for the Academy Award-winning documentary "The Last Days," which examines the experiences of Holocaust survivors from Hungary. The film, executive produced by Steven Spielberg, documents the deportation of 438,000 Hungarian Jews to Auschwitz within a six-week period and explores the motivations behind the Nazi regime's actions. In addition to his filmmaking, Moll is the founding executive director of the Shoah Foundation, established to record and preserve more than 50,000 visual histories of Holocaust survivors.

Moll's documentary work covers a range of topics beyond Holocaust history. His directorial projects include "Inheritance," "Running the Sahara," "Foo Fighters: Back and Forth," "Farmland," and "Obey Giant." "Running the Sahara" follows Ray Zahab, Charlie Engle, and Kevin Lin as they attempt to run across the Sahara Desert, with narration and executive production by Matt Damon. "Obey Giant" profiles the life and career of street artist and graphic designer Shepard Fairey. Moll also served as executive producer on the Netflix anthology series "Medal of Honor," which presents the stories of recipients of the U.S. military's highest award.

As a documentary director and producer, Moll has received recognition including an Academy Award, two Emmy Awards, a Grammy Award, and a Peabody Award. He served on the executive committee of the documentary branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and is the founding chair of the documentary committee for the Directors Guild of America. Moll's career reflects a commitment to documentary filmmaking, historical preservation, and storytelling across film and television.
