James D. Brosnahan Biography
James D. Brosnahan is a former Democratic member of the Illinois House of Representatives who served the 36th District from January 1997 until his resignation in February 2010. Born on July 5, 1962, in Evergreen Park, Illinois, he earned both his Bachelor of Arts and Juris Doctor degrees from Loyola University of Chicago. Before entering public office, he practiced law and is a member of the Illinois State Bar Association.
Brosnahan was first elected to the Illinois House in 1996 after defeating Republican incumbent Maureen Murphy, helping shift the political landscape in the south suburbs. During his legislative tenure, he represented parts of Oak Lawn, Evergreen Park, Chicago Ridge, Hometown, Palos Hills, and several wards on Chicago’s southwest side.
In the House, Brosnahan was deeply involved in a range of policy areas. He served as Chairperson of the Telecommunications Committee and was a member of the Judiciary I – Civil Law, Transportation & Motor Vehicles, Higher Education, and Roads, Bridges, and Traffic Safety Committees. His work often reflected a commitment to infrastructure, education, and public safety.
Following his resignation in 2010, Brosnahan was succeeded by Michael J. Carberry. He is married to Janet Brosnahan, and they have four children: Tierney, Jimmy, Quinn, and Julia.
