The pair first met at CollegeHumor, where Amir Blumenfeld worked as a writer and Jake Hurwitz began as an intern. After an office move seated them together, they started creating short, unscripted videos for Vimeo. This collaboration led to the creation of the web series "Jake and Amir," which was later produced by CollegeHumor. The series, featuring exaggerated versions of themselves—Hurwitz as the sensible straight man and Blumenfeld as his eccentric co-worker—became CollegeHumor's longest-running series, with nearly 700 episodes and approximately one billion views. The show included guest appearances from actors such as Thomas Middleditch, Kumail Nanjiani, Ben Schwartz, and Ed Helms, and received a Webby Award People's Voice for Best Web Series, as well as recognition from PC Magazine as a top web-only show.

Jake and Amir expanded their presence across multiple platforms. They starred in "The CollegeHumor Show" on MTV and released "Jake and Amir: Fired," a thirty-minute special that marked CollegeHumor's first paid content. The duo also created the Vimeo original series "Lonely and Horny," a scripted comedy later picked up by CollegeHumor for a second season. Headgum became a significant independent entity in audio entertainment, hosting 75 unique shows and featuring talent such as Allison Williams, David Cross, Tig Notaro, and Adam Conover, while also operating Gumball, a host-read ad sales marketplace.

After concluding "If I Were You," the duo launched the podcast "Segments," a show that frequently reinvents its format. They also established J&A Studios, a creative hub focused on Patreon content, sketches, and livestreams, while continuing as advisors and investors in Headgum.
