Jake Peavy

Jake Peavy is a three-time All-Star pitcher who built a 15-year Major League Baseball career known for his strikeout ability and two World Series championships. Peavy played for the San Diego Padres, Chicago White Sox, Boston Red Sox, and San Francisco Giants, recording 2,207 strikeouts and establishing himself as a dominant starting pitcher.

Peavy's career gained momentum in San Diego, where he became the Padres' ace. In his third year, he posted a 15–6 record, struck out 173 batters in 166 innings, and led Major League Baseball with a 2.27 ERA, becoming the youngest pitcher to win an ERA title since Dwight Gooden. Peavy later achieved the pitching Triple Crown, leading the National League with 19 wins, 240 strikeouts, and a 2.54 ERA, becoming only the eighth player to do so since the start of divisional play. He earned the NL Cy Young Award as a unanimous selection, one of only 10 National League players to receive the award unanimously. Peavy finished his Padres tenure as the franchise leader in strikeouts and set a club record by striking out 16 batters in a game twice.

Following his time in San Diego, Peavy was traded to the White Sox, then to the Red Sox, where he contributed to a World Series title. He was later traded to the Giants, winning another World Series championship and becoming the second starting pitcher after Don Gullett to win consecutive titles with different teams in each league. Peavy also received the American League Gold Glove Award during his career.

Off the field, Peavy faced financial adversity when a financial advisor misappropriated a significant portion of his retirement savings in a Ponzi-like scheme. Court documents revealed that approximately $15.1 million of his funds were directed into the fraudulent scheme without his authorization. Peavy's experience has been cited as a cautionary tale about financial literacy and trust for professional athletes.

After retiring, Peavy became an analyst for MLB Network, appearing on shows including "MLB Tonight." He was inducted into the San Diego Padres Hall of Fame and later joined the Padres as a special assistant to the CEO, supporting various departments and serving as an ambassador to fans and the San Diego community. Peavy's career in professional baseball, combined with his personal experiences, has established him as a knowledgeable voice in the sport and in discussions about athlete financial education.
