Jade Carey

Jade Carey is an American artistic gymnast who represented the United States at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. She is the 2020 Olympic champion on floor exercise and the 2022 World champion on vault. She has consistently demonstrated competitive skills across various apparatuses as a two-time World medalist and a four-time American national silver medalist. She was a member of the teams that won gold at the 2019 and 2022 World Championships and the 2018 Pan American Championships. She is an eight-time Olympic and World Championship medalist and holds a title as the sixth most decorated U.S. female gymnast of all time. Carey has seen success both nationally and internationally, having competed and won medals in various competitions such as the American Classic, US Classic, P&G US National Championships, World Championships, Pan American Championships, Cottbus World Cup, Baku World Cup, Doha World Cup, Melbourne World Cup, Winter Cup, NCAA Championships, and Swiss Cup.

At the Olympic Games, Carey performed the all-around during qualifications. She hit all four routines and qualified to the vault final in second place behind Simone Biles as well as the floor exercise final in third place. Despite finishing ninth in the all-around, she initially did not qualify for the all-around final due to two-per-country limitations as Biles and Sunisa Lee placed higher. However, when Biles withdrew from the all-around final, Carey, as the next-highest-scoring American, took her place. During the all-around final Carey recorded the second highest vault (behind Rebeca Andrade) and floor exercise (behind Mai Murakami and tied with Angelina Melnikova) scores; however she fell off the balance beam and finished eighth overall.

In the vault final, Carey finished eighth. During the running phase of her first vault, Carey performed only a tucked Yurchenko, a vault with a difficulty score of 3.3. She went on to successfully perform her second vault, an Amanar, with a difficulty of 5.8 but was deducted two points for performing two vaults with the same entry, finishing with an average score of 12.416. Despite this setback, Carey triumphed in the floor exercise final the following day, winning gold with a score of 14.366, outperforming her qualifications score of 14.100 and placing ahead of Italy's Vanessa Ferrari. She is the third consecutive American champion of the event, following Aly Raisman in 2012 and Simone Biles in 2016. Before the floor exercise final, Carey was the only U.S. women's gymnastics team member who had not yet won a medal.

Outside the Olympics, Carey made her NCAA debut on January 15, 2022, competing on all four apparatuses and earning an impressive 39.650 all-around score. She was named Pac-12 gymnast of the year and freshman of the year. She won the all-around title at the Pac-12 Championships and co-won the title on floor exercise. Carey earned an individual all-around berth to compete at the NCAA Championship. She also announced her decision to continue pursuing elite-level gymnastics while competing in NCAA gymnastics. Carey is currently an Oregon State Beavers women's gymnastics team member.
