Israel Meir Lau

Israel Meir Lau navigated through the dark chapters of World War II, surviving the Buchenwald concentration camp and emerging as a beacon of hope for many. Post war, he devoted his life to religious pursuits and became the Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of Israel, serving from 1993 to 2003. He then assumed the role of Chief Rabbi of Tel Aviv. Known for his ability to bridge communities, Lau has been able to connect with both Sephardic and Ashkenazic communities, earning him the title of a "consensus rabbi".

During his tenure, Lau demonstrated an unyielding commitment to interfaith work, which was underscored by his meeting with John Paul II in 1993 where they discussed peace in the Middle East. His efforts were acknowledged globally when, in 2011, he received the Legion of Honor from French President Nicolas Sarkozy. He was also awarded the Israel Prize in 2005, acknowledging his lifetime achievements and special contribution to society and the State of Israel. Despite facing protests from non-Orthodox Jewish movements, Lau's work and his mission remained undeterred.

In 2008, Lau was appointed the Chairman of Yad Vashem, further enhancing his role in Holocaust remembrance and education. His works include several books such as "The Festival of the Giving of the Torah," "Practical Judaism," "Do Not Raise a Hand Against the Boy," "Rav Lau on Pirkei Avos," and "Out of the Depths." He has spoken at international forums, most notably at the 2006 commemoration of the Babi Yar massacre, highlighting the importance of a global response to atrocities to prevent further tragedies.
