Inna Modja

Inna Modja, born Inna Bocoum in Bamako, Mali, is a Malian-French singer-songwriter, model, actress, filmmaker, and activist whose work spans music, film, and global advocacy. Modja's career blends traditional West African rhythms with contemporary pop, soul, and electronic music. She began her musical journey in childhood, joining a choir at age six and developing her skills at home with encouragement from her father, who introduced her to artists such as Ray Charles, Ella Fitzgerald, Otis Redding, and Sarah Vaughan. Mentored by world musician Salif Keita, Modja performed as a backing vocalist for Rail Band de Bamako before relocating to Paris with her family, traveling through Nigeria, Togo, and the United States.

Modja's recording career gained momentum after an appearance on a Fête de la Musique special on France 2, where she performed a duet with Jason Mraz on his song "Lucky." This exposure led to her debut album, "Everyday Is a New World," followed by "Love Revolution" and its single, "French Cancan." The single reached number 4 on the French charts, and "Love Revolution" achieved Gold status. Her discography also includes "Motel Bamako," which established her presence in European music markets and emphasized themes of empowerment and cultural heritage.

In addition to her music career, Modja is recognized for her work as a filmmaker and global activist. As a musician and filmmaker based in Mali, she addresses the role of women in combating climate change and desertification. Modja produced and starred in "The Great Green Wall," a documentary film that explores Africa's efforts to address desertification in the Sahel. The film follows her journey across Africa to create an album inspired by the Green Wall initiative, highlighting its impact on ecosystems, livelihoods, and Africa's role in global climate solutions. Modja also co-founded Code Green, an organization that integrates art and technology to support social justice.

Modja has used her personal experience as a survivor of female genital mutilation to advocate for change. After moving to Paris, she became aware of the effects of FGM and began campaigning against it, using her music and public platform to raise awareness. For over 15 years, Modja has advocated against female genital mutilation, promoted sustainability, and worked to amplify the voices of communities affected by climate change and desertification.

As a speaker, Modja addresses gender equality and climate justice, emphasizing the importance of women's leadership in building climate resilience. In her role as a United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification and Drought Goodwill Ambassador, she works to highlight the stories of communities on the frontlines of environmental change. Through her work in music, film, and advocacy, Modja is recognized as a prominent voice at the intersection of art, activism, and global justice.
