Impractical Jokers

Impractical Jokers is a hidden camera comedy group formed by Joe Gatto, James Murray, Brian Quinn, and Sal Vulcano, who are friends and former classmates from Monsignor Farrell High School in Staten Island, New York. The four were original members of the live improv and sketch comedy troupe The Tenderloins, which was founded in 1999. After producing comedy material online, Quinn joined the group, replacing former member Mike Boccio. The group often refers to their journey as a "nineteen-year overnight success."

Before launching their television series, The Tenderloins performed on the comedy circuit and gained early recognition by winning $100,000 on "It's Your Show," a video submission contest hosted by MTV's Carson Daly, with their comedy clip "Time Thugs." This exposure led to the filming of a pilot for Spike TV titled "Mission Uncomfortable." Although the pilot did not go to series, it set the stage for their future in television comedy.

"Impractical Jokers" is a hidden camera reality game show with improvisational elements that premiered on truTV, featuring all four members of The Tenderloins. The show distinguishes itself from other prank television programs by focusing on witty humor rather than slapstick or crude comedy. In each episode, the member who receives the most thumbs down is subjected to a "punishment," where he must engage in an embarrassing scenario orchestrated by the other members, all captured with covert recording equipment.

The group's work has expanded beyond television to include arena tours, an Impractical Jokers cruise, and the spin-off game show "The Misery Index" on TBS. The franchise has inspired multiple spin-offs in the United States and international adaptations in countries such as Belgium, Brazil, and Mexico. Impractical Jokers also released a feature film, "Impractical Jokers: The Movie," directed by Chris Henchy and produced by Funny or Die, featuring cameo appearances by Paula Abdul, Jaden Smith, and Joey Fatone.

Joe Gatto later departed from the group, but the series continued with Quinn, Murray, and Vulcano. The hidden-camera series later moved to TBS for its 11th season. With more than a decade on air and over a dozen seasons, "Impractical Jokers" remains a prominent example of hidden camera comedy, improvisational humor, and reality television, built on the premise of lifelong friends daring each other in public.
