Ime Udoka

Ime Udoka is an American professional basketball coach and former NBA player who serves as the head coach of the Houston Rockets. Undrafted out of college, Udoka played professionally in Europe before establishing a seven-year NBA career that included stints with the Los Angeles Lakers, New York Knicks, and Portland Trail Blazers. He also represented the Nigerian national team, helping Nigeria earn bronze medals at the FIBA Africa Championships, and received the Jason Collier Sportsmanship Award for his conduct on the court. Udoka's playing experience provided a foundation for his approach as a defensive-minded coach in the NBA.

After retiring as a player, Udoka joined Gregg Popovich's staff as an assistant coach with the San Antonio Spurs. During his tenure, the Spurs won an NBA championship against the Miami Heat and reached the NBA Playoffs each season. Udoka later served as an assistant coach for the Brooklyn Nets under Steve Nash, contributing to a playoff berth, and previously spent a season as an assistant with the Philadelphia 76ers under Brett Brown, where the team also reached the postseason. These roles contributed to Udoka's development in basketball strategy and coaching leadership.

Udoka was named head coach of the Boston Celtics, leading the team to a 51-31 regular season record and an NBA Finals appearance. The Celtics achieved the top-ranked defense in the NBA during his tenure, with Marcus Smart earning Defensive Player of the Year honors. The team advanced through the playoffs by defeating Brooklyn, Milwaukee, and Miami before falling to Golden State in the NBA Finals. Udoka was later suspended by the Celtics for an improper consensual relationship with a member of the organization.

Udoka became head coach of the Houston Rockets, where he oversaw a significant improvement in defensive efficiency, moving the team from 29th to seventh in the league. Under his leadership, the Rockets returned to the NBA playoffs, recorded 52 wins and 30 losses, clinched the Southwest Division, and finished as the second seed in the Western Conference. Udoka was named a finalist for the NBA Coach of the Year Award and signed a multi-year contract extension with the Rockets. He is recognized for his impact on team defense, player development, and franchise rebuilding in professional basketball.
