Hwang Dong-hyuk

Hwang Dong-hyuk is a South Korean film director, producer, and screenwriter. He is known for his work on critically acclaimed projects such as the film "Silenced" (2011) and the Netflix series "Squid Game" (2021–2025). His direction of the "Squid Game" episode "Red Light, Green Light" earned him an Emmy for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series in 2022, making him the first South Korean to win an Emmy in the category of directing. His impactful film "Silenced" led to the reopening of a real-life case and influenced Korean legislation with the "Dogani Bill", highlighting his ability to create work that resonates deeply with audiences.

In addition to his Emmy win, Hwang was recognized with the Geumgwan Order of Cultural Merit in 2022, the highest decoration awarded in the field of culture and arts in South Korea, demonstrating the respect and admiration he has earned in his home country. Hwang's other notable films, including "Miss Granny" and "The Fortress", have achieved commercial success and critical acclaim both in Korea and internationally. Hwang's creativity and influence extend beyond his directorial work. Following the success of "Squid Game", he created a mockumentary titled "The Best Show on the Planet". He is currently working on a new project, a feature film titled "Killing Old People Club", based on the writings of Umberto Eco. These projects, along with being listed among Time's The 100 Most Influential People of 2022, and receiving awards such as the Pony Chung Foundation Innovation Award in 2022 and the Chunsa Film Art Awards for Best Director in 2018, attest to his innovative and impactful presence in the global entertainment industry.
