Hugh Bohane

Hugh Bohane is an Australian journalist, war correspondent and author with more than two decades of experience reporting on conflict, political upheaval and culture around the world.

His reporting has taken him from Ukraine and the South Caucasus to Hong Kong, Myanmar, China and Sri Lanka. His work has appeared through international media including Deutsche Welle, Voice of America, Rolling Stone and The Diplomat, while in Australia he has worked with SBS, the ABC and 7 Tasmania.

Bohane reported from Ukraine immediately before and during Russia's full-scale invasion, documenting the conflict from refugee crossings and cities under attack to the country's east. Those experiences form the basis of his forthcoming book, "Under Siege in Ukraine: Witnessing Russia's Full-Scale Invasion," published by Big Sky Publishing and scheduled for release on December 1, 2026.

His work explores what happens beyond the headlines: how ordinary people respond to war and instability; how journalists operate amid danger and uncertainty; and how propaganda, disinformation and political pressure shape modern conflict.

Drawing on firsthand experiences from more than 20 years in journalism, Bohane speaks about war and geopolitics, frontline journalism, disinformation, risk and decision-making under pressure, and the human consequences of conflict. His talks combine eyewitness storytelling with insights into what it means to witness history at close range - and what extreme situations can reveal about fear, resilience, judgment and humanity.
