Howard Dean

Howard Dean is an American physician and politician whose career spans medicine, state government, national party leadership, and public advocacy. Dean attended Yale University, earning a bachelor's degree in political science, and completed his M.D. at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City before moving to Shelburne, Vermont, to establish a medical practice.

Dean began his public service career as an elected representative in Vermont, transitioning from full-time medical practice. He was elected lieutenant governor and served multiple terms, continuing to practice medicine until becoming governor.

Dean served as the 79th governor of Vermont, elected to five two-year terms, making him one of the state's longest-serving governors. During his tenure, Vermont faced an economic recession and a $60 million budget deficit. Dean prioritized fiscal restraint, balancing the state budget eleven times, paying off significant debt, raising the state's bond rating, and lowering income taxes twice. He also implemented a program providing universal health care for children and pregnant women and signed a civil unions law. Dean chaired the National Governors Association, the Democratic Governors Association, and the New England Governors Conference during his governorship.

As a presidential candidate, Dean was the first to rely heavily on the Internet for communication and fundraising, raising $14.8 million in one quarter and approximately $50 million in total. Political commentators have noted that Barack Obama's fundraising model built upon Dean's pioneering use of small donors and digital outreach. Dean authored "Winning Back America" and "You Have the Power: How to Take Back Our Country and Restore Democracy in America," outlining his vision for the Democratic Party.

Dean later served as chair of the Democratic National Committee, where he created and championed the "50 State Strategy," aiming to run competitive Democratic candidates nationwide. He strengthened the party's organization and communication through social media and digital tools, contributing to Democratic electoral successes.
