Haruki Murakami, born in Kyoto, Japan, grew up in Kobe before moving to Tokyo, where he attended Waseda University. After college, he and his wife ran a small jazz bar for seven years, an experience that shaped his early artistic sensibilities.
Murakami debuted as a novelist with Hear the Wind Sing (1979), which won the Gunzou Literature Prize for emerging writers. He continued with Pinball, 1973 and A Wild Sheep Chase, completing the celebrated “Trilogy of the Rat.” Over the years, he has authored internationally acclaimed novels including Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World, Norwegian Wood, Dance Dance Dance, South of the Border, West of the Sun, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, Sputnik Sweetheart, Kafka on the Shore, After Dark, 1Q84, and Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage.
In addition to novels, Murakami has published short story collections such as The Elephant Vanishes, After the Quake, and Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman, as well as the illustrated novella The Strange Library. His nonfiction work includes Underground, based on interviews with survivors of the 1995 Hanshin earthquake and Tokyo subway sarin gas attack, and What I Talk About When I Talk About Running, a series of personal essays exploring long-distance running and creativity.
Murakami’s distinctive blend of surrealism, introspection, and contemporary themes has earned him global recognition. His work has been translated into more than fifty languages, and he has received numerous literary honors, most recently the Jerusalem Prize, joining the ranks of J. M. Coetzee, Milan Kundera, and V. S. Naipaul.
