Harry Shum, Jr.

Harry Shum Jr. is a Chinese American actor, dancer, singer, and choreographer whose career spans dance, television, film, podcasting, and publishing. Initially interested in theater and sports, Shum discovered a passion for dance after auditioning for his high school dance team. He performed as a backup dancer for artists including Beyoncé, Alicia Keys, Missy Elliott, Jennifer Lopez, Jessica Simpson, and Mariah Carey, and appeared as the only male dancer on BET's ComicView. Shum also featured in a series of iPod advertisements as a dancing silhouette and worked as a dancer in films such as "You Got Served," "Stomp the Yard," and "Step Up 2: The Streets."

Shum's breakthrough came with his role as Mike Chang on the Fox musical comedy-drama series "Glee." Initially a guest star, he became a series regular and appeared in 90 episodes over six seasons, showcasing his ability to blend dance with dramatic and comedic acting. Following "Glee," Shum portrayed Magnus Bane in the Freeform action-fantasy series "Shadowhunters," based on Cassandra Clare's "The Mortal Instruments." His performance contributed to "Shadowhunters" receiving the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Drama Series, and he earned recognition at the E! People's Choice Awards.

Shum expanded his film career with a role in the romantic comedy "Crazy Rich Asians," which featured an all-Asian cast and received multiple award nominations, including at the Golden Globes, Critics' Choice Awards, and SAG Awards. He also appeared in the Academy Award-winning film "Everything Everywhere All at Once" and starred in the technological thriller "Broadcast Signal Intrusion." On television, Shum joined the cast of Grey's Anatomy as surgical intern Dr. Benson Kwan. In podcasting, he starred in and executive produced Realm's fiction podcast series "Echo Park," which was nominated for Best Fiction Podcast at the iHeartRadio Podcast Awards.

Shum has been nominated for six Screen Actors Guild Awards for ensemble performances in "Crazy Rich Asians," "Glee," and "Everything Everywhere All at Once," winning for the latter two. He co-authored the children's picture book "Martee Dares to Dance" with his wife. Shum's work in acting, dance, choreography, and storytelling highlights his ongoing contributions to the entertainment industry.
