Harold Holzer Biography
Harold Holzer is a nationally recognized, award-winning Lincoln and Civil War historian, is Director of the Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute at Hunter College in New York, a post he assumed in 2015 after 23 years as senior vice president of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The author, co-author, or editor of 55 books, he earned a 2008 National Humanities Medal, won the 2015 Gilder Lehrman Lincoln Prize, and received a 2025 Guggenheim Fellowship. Holzer co-chaired the U. S. Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission (2000-2010, appointed by President Clinton) and now chairs The Lincoln Forum.
In 2026, he was named Manhattan Borough Historian. Holzer’s latest book is "Brought Forth on this Continent: Abraham Lincoln and American Immigration", released in paperback in 2026. He has lectured throughout the nation—at venues ranging from annual meetings, colleges, libraries, historical societies, and government retreats to Lincoln Center, Ford’s Theatre, and the White House.
