Harlen Wheatley

Harlen Wheatley is a leading figure in American whiskey, serving as the Master Distiller of Buffalo Trace Distillery, the oldest continuously operating distillery in the United States. Wheatley’s formal education in chemistry and chemical engineering led him to Buffalo Trace, where he gained extensive on-the-job experience before becoming the resident Master Distiller.

Wheatley attended Northern Kentucky University, earning a degree in chemistry, and later completed a chemical engineering degree at the University of Kentucky, receiving formal training in distillation and separation techniques. Drawn by the intersection of science and craft, Wheatley was attracted to Buffalo Trace for its history and more than two centuries of heritage and expertise in bourbon production.

Wheatley joined Buffalo Trace as a supervisor and was later promoted to Distillery Manager. He was eventually named Master Distiller, becoming the sixth person to hold the title at Buffalo Trace since the Civil War. Throughout his career, Wheatley has worked in every aspect of whiskey production, from raw materials to barrel aging. He has led initiatives focused on quality, consistency, and efficiency, while also promoting and educating the public about bourbon whiskey.

Wheatley’s tenure is characterized by a balance of tradition and innovation. He has spoken at industry conferences, including the James B. Beam Institute Industry Conference, and holds a patent pending for a fermentation process. He led the development of "Wheatley Vodka" and collaborated with musician Chris Stapleton to produce "Traveller Whiskey," named after Stapleton’s album and blended and bottled at Buffalo Trace Distillery.

Wheatley also oversaw Buffalo Trace’s expansion, which included a $1.2 billion investment to meet growing demand for its products. He has received multiple honors, including four nominations for the James Beard Award in the Outstanding Wine and Spirits Professional category, Distillery Manager of the Year at Whisky Magazine’s Icons of Whiskey America Awards, the Northern Kentucky University Chemistry and Biochemistry department’s Outstanding Alumni Award, and induction into the University of Kentucky’s College of Engineering Hall of Distinction.

Wheatley views whiskey-making as both an art and a science, using chemistry to control variables such as alcohol levels, flavor compounds, and aging conditions, while also experimenting with mash bills, barrel finishes, and blends to create unique bourbons. With decades of experience and a commitment to both craft and education, Wheatley is recognized as a defining voice in the American bourbon industry.
