Hank Capps

Hank Capps, MD, FAAFP, is a transformational enterprise leader and nationally recognized physician–executive with more than 20 years of experience guiding multibillion-dollar health systems, corporate ventures, and high-growth organizations through strategic, operational, and cultural transformation. A proven CEO- and President-level leader, Dr. Capps brings deep expertise in enterprise strategy, large-scale M&A, operating model redesign, digital transformation, and cross-industry value creation consistently delivering sustainable financial performance, modernization, and growth.

Dr. Capps most recently served as Executive Vice President and Chief Information and Digital Officer of Wellstar Health System, a $7.5B enterprise and the largest not-for-profit health system in Georgia. In this role, he drove systemwide strategy and transformation, led enterprise technology, digital health, data, and innovation, and redesigned the operating model of the multi-billion-dollar organization. He negotiated and executed Wellstar’s historic $1.5B acquisition of Augusta University Health System and a 40-year exclusive academic partnership with the Medical College of Georgia expanding Wellstar’s statewide presence, strengthening clinical excellence, and positioning Wellstar as a leader in academic medicine. His leadership accelerated digital modernization, delivered multi-million-dollar operational improvements, implemented a modern enterprise ERP system under budget, and deployed AI-powered capabilities that improved clinical and business outcomes. He partnered closely with the Board of Trustees through strategic planning, finance, audit, investment, and the technology & innovation committees.

As President and Co-Founder of Catalyst by Wellstar, Dr. Capps built a first-of-its-kind innovation company and a $100M top-quartile corporate venture fund from concept to operating enterprise. He created the Lab–Studio–Fund model, developed strategic focus areas and a 15-year financial plan, secured limited partners, and launched multiple companies, including AI-first and frontier-technology platforms. Under his leadership, Catalyst established a national presence, activated cross-sector partnerships, opened the Catalyst Innovation Center in Atlanta’s Tech Square, and delivered commercial products and scalable revenue pathways. Dr. Capps held full P&L ownership and governance responsibility for the portfolio and operating company.

Prior to Wellstar, Dr. Capps served as Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the $1.5B Novant Health Medical Group and later as Chief Digital Health and Engagement Officer for Novant Health. He led major system integrations, doubled organizational scale, advanced value-based care performance, developed CIN, launched services lines across the acute care footprint, and positioned the system as a national leader in digital and consumer-centric care delivery. He pioneered drone-powered medical supply delivery with the first-in-nation FAA approval while building digital health businesses that served as new growth engines.

A board-certified family physician for over two decades, Dr. Capps brings the rare combination of clinical credibility, enterprise leadership, and commercial acumen. His governance experience spans corporate boards, venture companies, academic institutions, and nonprofit organizations. He currently serves on multiple boards, including MetaImpact, Polysight, FortyAU, Betty’s Co., and Campbell University’s Board of Trustees.

Dr. Capps is a frequent national keynote speaker on strategy, innovation, AI, digital transformation, and the future of healthcare. His achievements have been recognized with numerous awards, including Georgia CIO of the Year (Orbie), multiple CHIME Most Wired Awards, HIMSS Stage 7 distinctions, and Becker’s Chief Digital Officers to Know.

He earned his medical degree from the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University and completed residency and was chief resident in Charlotte, North Carolina.
