Gunnar Esiason

Gunnar Esiason is a cystic fibrosis and rare disease patient leader whose personal experience has contributed to increased awareness and advocacy in the healthcare and biotechnology sectors. Diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at age 2, Esiason and his family became prominent figures in the national conversation about the disease, including being featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated. At the time of his diagnosis, cystic fibrosis was widely considered a fatal pediatric illness, with an average life expectancy of around 30 years.

Esiason's journey through childhood and young adulthood involved significant medical challenges, including daily treatments such as nebulizer therapy, use of a mechanical vest to clear his lungs, and reliance on a feeding tube. During college, he faced limited treatment options until participating in a clinical trial for the drug Trikafta, which led to notable improvements in his respiratory health.

Esiason has transformed his experience into a professional mission focused on early-stage drug development, patient engagement, and health policy. He leads patient engagement and patient-centered innovation at RA Capital's venture group, RA Ventures, and has developed a patient engagement platform for a medical nutrition company. Esiason also established a venture philanthropy practice at the Boomer Esiason Foundation and has consulted on clinical trial development, real-world evidence studies, and mental health screening tools specific to cystic fibrosis. Through the Boomer Esiason Foundation, the family has raised nearly $200 million to support research and advocacy for cystic fibrosis.

As a communicator and advocate, Esiason has built a significant platform within the cystic fibrosis and rare disease communities. His blog has reached nearly 1 million page views, and he co-hosted the podcast "Breathe In: A Cystic Fibrosis Podcast," which appeared in the iTunes top 200 health podcasts. He also hosted "The State of Health with Gunnar Esiason," featuring interviews with U.S. Senators, Governors, and healthcare leaders. Esiason's health policy perspectives have been published in Wall Street Journal, USA Today, The Hill, and STAT News. He has delivered keynote addresses at medical centers and health industry events, including the pre-commencement address at St. Louis University School of Medicine.

Esiason's story was featured in the ESPN documentary "Second Wind: The Boomer and Gunnar Esiason Story," an E60 film chronicling his family's efforts to advance cystic fibrosis research and patient care. He holds an MBA from Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth, an MPH from the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy & Clinical Practice, and a BA from Boston College. Esiason serves on the board of directors at the Boomer Esiason Foundation and No Patient Left Behind. His work continues to influence healthcare policy, patient advocacy, and rare disease research.
