Guillermo Ortiz Martínez

Guillermo Ortiz Martínez is a distinguished Mexican economist and policymaker with a storied career in global finance, central banking, and economic policy. He is best known for his tenure as Governor of the Bank of Mexico (Banxico) from 1998 to 2009, where he played a pivotal role in steering the country through financial crises and implementing monetary policies that strengthened Mexico’s economic stability. Under his leadership, Banxico gained autonomy, and inflation targeting became a cornerstone of Mexico’s macroeconomic framework.

Before leading Mexico’s central bank, Ortiz served as Minister of Finance and Public Credit (1994–1997), where he was instrumental in managing the country’s response to the 1994 Tequila Crisis. His decisive actions in stabilizing the peso and negotiating international financial support were crucial in restoring confidence in Mexico’s economy.

Ortiz’s expertise extends to the international financial stage. He has been a Board Member of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) and has held advisory roles at leading financial institutions, contributing to discussions on global economic policy and financial regulation. He also served as Chairman of the Board of Grupo Financiero Banorte, one of Mexico’s largest financial institutions.

A graduate of UNAM (National Autonomous University of Mexico), Ortiz holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Stanford University, cementing his academic foundation in macroeconomics and international finance. He has also been involved in academia, sharing his insights as a professor and speaker at global financial forums.
