Gregory Nava

Gregory Nava is an American film director, producer, and screenwriter known for his commitment to bringing Latino stories and experiences to mainstream cinema. Nava directed the short film "The Journal of Diego Rodriguez Silva" while at UCLA, based on the life of García Lorca, and won the Best Dramatic Film Award at the National Student Film Festival.

Nava earned critical attention for his first two feature films, both produced on minimal budgets. "The Confessions of Amans," a medieval drama, won the Best First Feature Award at the Chicago International Film Festival. "El Norte," a film depicting the journey of Guatemalan émigrés in Southern California, received an Academy Award nomination for best screenplay. The film, which addresses the challenges faced by immigrants, has been recognized by the Library of Congress National Film Registry for its cultural significance.

Nava continued to focus on Latino narratives with films such as "My Family/Mi Familia," a multi-generational saga that featured Jennifer Lopez in her first film role. He directed "Selena," the biographical film about the Tejana singer, which starred Lopez and led to a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress. Nava has directed three films—"El Norte," "My Family," and "Selena"—that have been selected for the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for their cultural, historical, or aesthetic significance.

Nava's work also extends to television. He executive produced and directed episodes of the series "American Family: Journey of Dreams" for Public Broadcasting Service. He produced, wrote, and directed the political thriller "Bordertown," which debuted at the Berlin Film Festival and is based on true events in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, starring Jennifer Lopez as a Chicago-based reporter.

In addition to Academy Award, Emmy, and Golden Globe nominations, Nava has received five Imagen Awards, three ALMA Awards, the Hispanic Heritage Award for the Arts at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., the National Hispanic Heritage Foundation Raul Julia Award for Excellence, the Latino Spirit Award from the State of California, and lifetime achievement awards from the National Council of La Raza and the Imagen Foundation. As a Mexican-American filmmaker, Nava has consistently worked to bring Hispanic stories and characters into the mainstream of U.S. popular culture, establishing his influence in American cinema and Latino representation.
