Gregg Berhalter

Gregg Berhalter is recognized for his contributions to American soccer as both a player and a coach. Berhalter played 18 professional seasons in the Netherlands, England, Germany, and the United States, serving as a central defender. He earned 44 caps for the United States Men's National Team (USMNT), representing the country at two FIFA World Cups and playing a key role in the 2002 squad that reached the quarterfinals in Korea/Japan. Berhalter is among the few Americans to have captained multiple European clubs, holding that distinction for two teams in Germany. He contributed to LA Galaxy's MLS Supporters Shield win and, as a player/assistant coach, helped secure the MLS Cup.

Berhalter's transition to coaching drew on his international playing experience. His time in four countries influenced his approach to tactics, defensive structure, and game transitions. He began his coaching career at Swedish club Hammarby, guiding the team close to the Allsvenskan promotion playoffs. Berhalter later became sporting director and head coach of Columbus Crew SC, where he implemented an analytics-driven, detail-oriented management style. Under his leadership, Columbus reached the MLS Cup Playoffs in four of five seasons and advanced to the MLS Cup Final.

Berhalter was named head coach of the USMNT, becoming the first former national team player to coach the United States at a World Cup. He led the team to two continental championships, winning the inaugural Nations League title and the CONCACAF Gold Cup, both against Mexico. At the World Cup, Berhalter's squad finished second in Group B and advanced to the Round of 16. He became the first American to participate in the FIFA World Cup as both a player and a head coach.

During his tenure, Berhalter compiled a 44-17-13 record in 74 matches and a 29-9-7 record in official competitions, guiding the USMNT through a successful World Cup qualification campaign. He developed a roster featuring young talents such as Christian Pulisic, Tyler Adams, Yunus Musah, and Weston McKennie, and worked to strengthen the team's culture. Berhalter's time with the USMNT concluded following the team's early exit from the Copa América group stage. He serves as head coach and director of football for Major League Soccer club Chicago Fire.
