Gore Verbinski is a film director, screenwriter, and producer known for his work in the film industry, particularly in directing major Hollywood blockbusters and genre-spanning films. His films have grossed more than $3 billion worldwide at the global box office. Before beginning his professional film career, Verbinski played in several punk rock bands, an experience that influenced his creative approach. He later graduated from the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film.
After director Julien Temple viewed some of his early work, Verbinski joined Nitrate Films and later Palomar Pictures, where he directed music videos for bands such as Bad Religion, NOFX, and Monster Magnet. He then moved on to directing commercials for major brands including Nike, Coca-Cola, Canon, Skittles, and United Airlines. One of his most recognized commercials was for Budweiser, featuring frogs croaking the brand name, which earned him four Clio Awards and a Cannes Advertising Silver Lion.
Verbinski made his feature film directorial debut with the family comedy "Mouse Hunt" and followed with the action-comedy "The Mexican," starring Julia Roberts and Brad Pitt. He then directed the horror film remake "The Ring," which grossed over $200 million worldwide. This success led to his work on the "Pirates of the Caribbean" trilogy: "The Curse of the Black Pearl," "Dead Man's Chest," and "At World's End." "The Curse of the Black Pearl" grossed over $650 million and received five Academy Award nominations. "Dead Man's Chest" became one of his biggest successes, becoming the third film to gross over $1 billion at the international box office.
Between large-scale productions, Verbinski directed "The Weather Man," a drama starring Nicolas Cage, and ventured into animation with "Rango," a computer-animated Western comedy. "Rango" earned the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, a BAFTA Award, five Annie Awards, and nominations from the Golden Globes and the Producers Guild of America. The film, an animated homage to "Chinatown," features an anxious chameleon in the Mojave Desert and showcases Verbinski's ability to deliver visually dynamic storytelling. He continued his work in genre filmmaking with the live-action Western "The Lone Ranger" and the psychological horror film "A Cure for Wellness."
Verbinski returned to filmmaking with "Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die," a film centered on a man claiming to be from the future who takes a group of diners hostage in Los Angeles, insisting they are the last hope to prevent a world-ending catastrophe. The film features an ensemble cast including Sam Rockwell, Haley Lu Richardson, Michael Peña, Zazie Beetz, Juno Temple, Asim Chaudhry, and Tom Taylor. Verbinski's direction is noted for its orchestration of tone, pacing, and visual storytelling, with striking visuals integral to the narrative.
