Glenn Youngkin

Glenn Youngkin is an American businessman and politician known for his transition from global finance to serving as governor of Virginia. A member of the Republican Party, Youngkin spent 25 years at The Carlyle Group, a private equity firm, where he became co-CEO. He attended Rice University on an athletic scholarship, earning degrees in engineering and managerial studies. After completing his education and business school, Youngkin advanced to co-CEO at The Carlyle Group, contributing to the firm's growth as a global investment leader.

Youngkin's entry into politics began with his gubernatorial campaign, which was his first run for elected office. He left his executive role at Carlyle to run for governor, focusing his campaign on education reform, lowering taxes, and fostering a business-friendly environment. His advocacy for parental involvement in schools and school choice resonated with voters. Youngkin won the Virginia governorship, defeating former Governor Terry McAuliffe by a narrow margin, marking the first Republican victory in the state’s gubernatorial race in over a decade. Education was a central focus of Youngkin's administration. He oversaw increased investments in education, the launch of lab schools to promote choice and innovation, an 18 percent raise for teachers, and the passage of the Virginia Literacy Act. His policies emphasized career and technical education, reformed the school accreditation process, established cell phone-free education statewide, and implemented the All In Virginia tutoring plan to address learning loss from pandemic-related school closures. He launched a national policy group, Empowering America’s Parents, focused on promoting a federal school choice program through a multimillion-dollar ad campaign targeting battleground states. In public safety, Youngkin's Operation Bold Blue Line contributed to a 30 percent decline in homicides, and Virginia became a leader in combating fentanyl overdoses.

Due to Virginia's constitutional term limits, Youngkin was ineligible for re-election. As he concluded his term, he reflected on his tenure as governor as transformative and results-driven.
