Glenn Kramon is an American journalism editor and educator whose career spans the news industry and business education. Kramon began his journalism career at The Kansas City Star after graduating from Stanford University. He then joined The San Francisco Examiner, where he held positions including business editor, Sunday news editor, and reporter.
In the late 1980s, Kramon joined The New York Times as a copy editor and health care reporter, later serving as assignment editor, technology editor, enterprise editor, Sunday business editor, and deputy business editor before becoming the paper's business editor, overseeing its financial news staff.
At The New York Times, Kramon advanced to assistant managing editor, overseeing long-form projects and managing original reporting ventures across the newsroom. His editorial leadership guided coverage on topics such as concussions among young athletes, distracted driving, safety and environmental hazards of sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks, tax code loopholes, medical treatments lacking evidence, genetically modified foods, and environmental issues in China. He introduced a system to help editors develop management skills and authored a handbook on newsroom operations.
Reporters supervised and edited by Kramon have won 10 Pulitzer Prizes and have been finalists 25 times. They have also received honors including nine George Polk Awards, seven Gerald Loeb Awards for business journalism, the Goldsmith Prize for Investigative Reporting, and the Grantham Prize for environmental reporting. Kramon received the Lawrence Minard Editor Award from UCLA, recognizing outstanding editors who do not receive bylines.
Kramon later joined the Stanford Graduate School of Business as a lecturer in management, where he teaches the "Winning Writing" workshop. The course covers techniques and practical exercises for writing memos, emails, cold-call letters, speeches, feedback, news releases, media responses, and opinion pieces. Kramon reviews each student's assignments, provides detailed feedback, and highlights exemplary writing in class. His students have published op-eds in publications such as the New York Times and Wall Street Journal.
Kramon was honored with the MBA Distinguished Teaching Award, which he has described as more meaningful to him than any Pulitzer Prize. His approach to writing emphasizes clarity and efficiency: "The reader is impatient. Start with the most important conclusion and then explain how you got there." Kramon has also shared his expertise as a guest on Stanford GSB's "Think Fast, Talk Smart" podcast, offering insights on communication and writing. Throughout his career, Kramon has focused on the craft of journalism, business writing, and developing effective communicators.
