Giovanni Reyna

Giovanni Alejandro Reyna is a professional soccer player who plays as an attacking midfielder for Bundesliga club Borussia Mönchengladbach and the United States national team. Reyna is the son of former U.S. national team players Claudio Reyna and Danielle Reyna. Claudio Reyna captained the United States at two World Cups and earned 112 caps, while Danielle Reyna was a national champion at North Carolina and played for the U.S. Women's National Team.

Reyna began his youth soccer career with New York City FC before moving to Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund, where he made a significant impact. During the DFB-Pokal, he became the youngest scorer in the German Cup's history at age 17 and contributed to the club’s DFB-Pokal title. Reyna also became the youngest Bundesliga player to record a hat trick of assists. He was shortlisted for the Kopa Trophy, an award recognizing top young football talent. At Dortmund, Reyna scored 17 goals, provided 16 assists, and created 103 chances, establishing himself as a creative playmaker in European soccer.

Injuries have affected Reyna’s career, leading to loan spells at Nottingham Forest and Borussia Mönchengladbach before his permanent move to Mönchengladbach. Off the field, Reyna has faced personal adversity, including the loss of his older brother, Jack, to brain cancer at age 13, an event that has influenced the Reyna family.

Internationally, Reyna debuted for the United States senior team and contributed to victories in the CONCACAF Nations League, earning the best player award. His career has included controversy involving the U.S. men’s national team and former manager Gregg Berhalter. Reyna returned to the national spotlight with a notable performance at the FIFA World Cup, scoring in a 4-1 win over Paraguay. Reyna continues to be recognized for his technical skill and playmaking ability in both club and international soccer.
