Gianni Infantino

Gianni Infantino is a Swiss football administrator who has served as president of FIFA. Infantino studied law at the University of Fribourg and is fluent in Italian, French, German, English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Arabic. Before entering football administration, he worked as legal counsel and general secretary for the International Centre for Sports Studies in Neuchâtel, Switzerland. He later joined UEFA, where he held roles including director of legal affairs and club licensing, deputy general secretary, and ultimately general secretary until his election to the FIFA presidency.

During his tenure at UEFA, Infantino contributed to the implementation of Financial Fair Play and the expansion of the UEFA European Championship to 24 teams. He was involved in the development of the UEFA Nations League and led initiatives addressing issues such as racism, discrimination, violence, hooliganism, and match fixing in European football. These efforts reflected his focus on governance, legal compliance, and the integrity of the sport.

Infantino was elected FIFA president in an extraordinary congress in Zurich, becoming the first Italian to hold the position and the first president elected after the organization's corruption scandals. He has been re-elected for subsequent terms, running unopposed. As president, Infantino has overseen multiple World Cups, including tournaments in Russia, Qatar, and North America. Under his leadership, the men's World Cup expanded from 32 to 48 teams, representing a significant change in the tournament's format.

FIFA's reported annual revenue increased substantially during Infantino's tenure, with the organization experiencing growth in commercial partnerships and broadcast rights. The FIFA Women's World Cup also saw increased attendance, broadcast deals, and global reach. Infantino has promoted gender equity across FIFA competitions, advocating for equal conditions. He played a role in the selection of Saudi Arabia as host of the 2034 FIFA World Cup.

Infantino has been a member of the International Olympic Committee, further establishing his influence in international sports governance. His leadership has been characterized by organizational growth, expanded opportunities, and increased commercialization, as well as ongoing debates about governance and reform in world football.
