George Felix Allen is a Republican politician and lawyer whose career in public service spans more than two decades across multiple levels of Virginia and federal government. Allen, a self-described Common Sense Jeffersonian Conservative, served the Commonwealth of Virginia as governor, in both bodies of the United States Congress, and as a delegate holding Thomas Jefferson's seat in the Virginia General Assembly. He earned his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Virginia School of Law and went on to build a significant political career in Virginia.
Allen's rise through Virginia politics was marked by steady electoral success. He served in the Virginia House of Delegates, resigning after winning a special election for Virginia's 7th congressional district. After his district was eliminated during redistricting, Allen declined to run for a full term and instead ran for governor, defeating Democratic Attorney General Mary Sue Terry. In his inaugural address, Allen referred to his supporters as his insurgents.
As governor, Allen implemented reforms that positioned Virginia as a model in economic development, public safety, education accountability, and government innovation. He enacted tax cuts exceeding $600 million, established high academic Standards of Learning and School Performance Report Cards, improved public safety by abolishing parole through truth-in-sentencing, initiated welfare reforms, and introduced the nation's first public-private transportation funding system. During his tenure, Virginia's top exports shifted from coal and cigarettes to semiconductors, earning the state the nickname Silicon Dominion from U.S. News and World Report.
Elected to the United States Senate, Allen continued to advocate for policies promoting innovation and technology leadership. In the Senate, he played a key role in the passage of the 21st Century Nanotechnology Research and Development Act, championed the Minority Serving Institution Digital and Wireless Technology Opportunity Act, and sponsored the bipartisan Internet Tax Nondiscrimination Act. Allen was unanimously elected chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee and was the only Republican to defeat a Democratic senator in his election year.
Following his time in elected office, Allen remained active in policy and public affairs. He founded George Allen Strategies, providing counsel and strategic advice on energy, technology, and business development. Allen also authored the book "What Washington Can Learn from the World of Sports," drawing on his background as the son of an NFL coach to offer insights on leadership, teamwork, and competition—principles that continue to inform his approach to governance and public engagement.
