Gavin McKenna

Gavin McKenna is a Canadian ice hockey player recognized for his achievements in junior and collegiate hockey. McKenna played three seasons in the Western Hockey League with the Medicine Hat Tigers and became the first Yukon-born player to be drafted first overall in the WHL. He was granted exceptional player status by BC Hockey and Hockey Alberta, joining Connor Bedard and Matthew Savoie as the only players to receive this designation. In his first full WHL season, McKenna recorded 34 goals and 97 points in 61 regular season games, earning the Jim Piggott Memorial Trophy as the WHL's rookie of the year, the CHL Rookie of the Year Award, and spots on both the CHL Third All-Star Team and All-Rookie Team.

In his second full WHL season, McKenna registered at least one point in all but three games, recording 41 goals and a league-leading 88 assists in 56 games. He finished second in the WHL with 129 points and earned the Four Broncos Memorial Trophy as the WHL's most valuable player, as well as Canadian Hockey League Player of the Year honors. McKenna contributed 9 goals and 38 points in 16 playoff games as the Tigers won the WHL championship and competed in the Memorial Cup, reaching the championship final.

Following the NCAA's decision to allow CHL players to participate in collegiate competition, McKenna became a sought-after recruit by major American universities. He committed to Penn State University, citing the opportunity to compete against older and stronger players as preparation for a professional hockey career. During his freshman season at Penn State, McKenna became the first player in program history to win the Big Ten scoring title, set the single-season record for assists with 36, and became just the third Nittany Lion to reach the 50-point mark in a season. His eight points in a single game against Ohio State set an NCAA Division I record for most points in a game in nearly four decades, and his seven assists in that game were the most since 1983. McKenna earned Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors, was named National Rookie of the Month twice, Big Ten Star of the Week four times, and was the only unanimous selection to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team.

Internationally, McKenna won a bronze medal with Canada at the IIHF World Junior Championship and was twice named Canada's player of the game, including after recording a hat trick in a 9-1 victory against Denmark and after posting one goal and three assists in the bronze medal game against Finland. NHL Central Scouting highlighted his hockey IQ, scoring ability, and playmaking vision, noting his consistent impact in both even-strength and power-play situations.

The Toronto Maple Leafs selected McKenna with the No. 1 pick in the Upper Deck NHL Draft, making him Penn State's first-ever No. 1 pick and placing the university among a select group of NCAA hockey programs with a first-overall selection. McKenna is a citizen of the Trʼondëk Hwëchʼin First Nation, and his journey from Whitehorse, Yukon to the top of the NHL Draft underscores his dedication and skill in the sport of ice hockey.
