Gary Larson

Gary Larson is a cartoonist recognized for transforming the landscape of newspaper comics. He is best known for the single-panel comic series "The Far Side," noted for its scientific themes and unconventional humor. Before gaining widespread recognition, Larson created "Nature's Way" for The Seattle Times, which highlighted his surreal style and featured unusual characters such as aliens and anthropomorphic animals. Although he enjoyed drawing as a child, Larson did not formally study art and graduated from Washington State University with a degree in communications, taking numerous science courses that influenced his creative approach.

"The Far Side" was syndicated internationally to more than 1,900 newspapers for fifteen years, becoming a cultural phenomenon by blending surrealism, anthropomorphic humor, and satire. The comic's popularity led to the sale of more than 41 million books and 79 million calendars, and it has been translated into more than 17 languages. Larson published 23 "Far Side" books, each appearing on The New York Times Best Seller List. His engagement with the natural world was recognized by the scientific community, which named both a chewing louse (Strigiphilus garylarsoni) and a quill mite (Gunabopicobia garylarsoni) after him. Additionally, paleontologists adopted the term "thagomizer" for a stegosaurus's tail spikes, inspired by one of his cartoons.

Larson received multiple honors for his work, including the Reuben Award for Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year from the National Cartoonists Society, the title of Best Syndicated Panel Cartoonist, and the Max and Moritz Award for Best International Comic Strip Panel by the International Comic Salon. He also received the Regents' Distinguished Alumnus Award from Washington State University and delivered a commencement address titled "The Importance of Being Weird." His cartoons inspired the animated television films "Tales from the Far Side" and "Tales from the Far Side II" for CBS, both of which were featured at international film festivals, with "Tales from the Far Side" receiving a Grand Prix award at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival.

Larson retired from "The Far Side" at its peak, choosing to step away from daily cartooning. He continued to create occasional work, including a cover illustration for The New Yorker and the publication of "The Complete Far Side," a comprehensive two-book collection of the comic series. After a long hiatus, Larson began publishing new "The Far Side" comics online, adapting to digital platforms and reaching new audiences. The series earned the Webby People's Voice Award for Humor in the Web category, demonstrating the enduring appeal of Larson's distinctive blend of science, humor, and cartoon art.
