Garth Graham

Garth Graham, MD, is a cardiologist, public health expert, and healthcare executive with a career spanning clinical medicine, federal health policy, and digital health innovation. An elected member of the National Academy of Medicine, Graham earned his medical degree at Yale University School of Medicine and his Master of Public Health at Yale School of Public Health. He completed his internal medicine residency at Massachusetts General Hospital and his cardiology fellowship at Johns Hopkins. Graham holds board certifications in internal medicine, cardiology, and interventional cardiology.

Graham served as deputy assistant secretary at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services under both the Obama and Bush administrations, where he led the Office of Minority Health and directed the development of the federal government's first National Health Disparities Plan. He also served as a White House Fellow and as special assistant to the secretary of Health and Human Services. Following his government service, Graham became assistant dean for health policy and chief of health services research in the Department of Medicine at University of Florida School of Medicine. He later served as president of the Aetna Foundation and as vice president and chief community health officer at CVS Health.

Graham is director and global head of healthcare and public health at Google Health and YouTube. In this role, he has led efforts to connect healthcare consumers and medical experts beyond traditional clinical settings by delivering credible health information to YouTube’s global audience and providing physicians with a platform to share medical knowledge. Under his leadership, YouTube Health has partnered with healthcare organizations including Cleveland Clinic, Mass General Brigham, Mayo Clinic, Stanford Medicine, and Kaiser Family Foundation.

A proponent of health equity and combating medical misinformation, Graham has overseen the implementation of labels on YouTube videos to help viewers identify authoritative health content and the creation of health content shelves that highlight trusted sources. He has also supported partnerships with the CDC, Harvard, and England’s National Health Service to address misinformation and direct viewers to credible health resources. Graham serves on several boards, including the Advisory Council to the Director of the NIH, the Institute of Medicine Board on Population Health, and the board of the National Quality Forum. The Satcher Health Leadership Institute at Morehouse School of Medicine established the Garth N. Graham Distinguished Lectureship Award in his honor. Graham’s work has been featured in Fortune, USA Today, The Hill, Chicago Tribune, Essence, U.S. News & World Report, and Ebony.
