Frederik Andersen

Frederik Andersen is a Danish professional ice hockey goaltender known for his career in the National Hockey League. Andersen is the first Danish-born goaltender to play in the NHL, a distinction that has contributed to his recognition in Denmark. Before joining the NHL, Andersen competed in Superisligaen and Elitserien, the top leagues in Denmark and Sweden. He was initially selected by the Carolina Hurricanes in the seventh round of the NHL Entry Draft, but after not reaching an agreement with the team, he re-entered the draft and was selected in the third round, 87th overall.

Andersen made his NHL debut for the Anaheim Ducks, replacing starting goaltender Jonas Hiller to start the second period. Taking over with a 3-1 Ducks deficit, he logged two shutout periods and earned his first NHL win, a 6-3 victory over the Dallas Stars, becoming the first Danish-born goaltender in NHL history. After recording his 30th win of the season, Andersen tied an NHL record as the fastest goaltender to reach 50 career wins, achieving the milestone in 68 career games and tying the record set by Bill Durnan of the Montreal Canadiens. He was later traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs, where he became the franchise's starting goaltender. Andersen posted a 33-16-14 record with a 2.67 goals-against average, a .918 save percentage, and four shutouts, helping Toronto secure a playoff berth.

During his tenure with the Carolina Hurricanes, Andersen posted a 35-14-3 record with a .922 save percentage, a 2.17 goals-against average, and four shutouts, finishing fourth in Vezina Trophy voting. Andersen and Antti Raanta received the William M. Jennings Trophy as the goaltenders of the team that allowed the fewest goals during the regular season. He was also named an NHL All-Star. Andersen faced adversity when the Hurricanes announced he would be out indefinitely to address a blood clotting issue discovered during medical testing, but he returned to make 24 saves in a 4-1 win against the Montreal Canadiens. He was voted a finalist for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, awarded to the player who best exemplifies perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey.

Andersen played in his 500th NHL game, making 22 saves in his 299th career win and becoming the 84th goaltender and first Danish goaltender in NHL history to reach the 500-game benchmark. He won the Stanley Cup with the Hurricanes, finishing as the most prolific postseason goalie in franchise history, holding records for most games played, most wins, most shutouts, and the lowest goals-against average in Hurricanes playoff history. He was the first person to be handed the Stanley Cup by the captain after the win. Following his championship, Andersen signed with the Edmonton Oilers, continuing a career defined by resilience, record-setting performances, and a pioneering presence in Danish ice hockey.
