Frank Miller

Frank Miller is an American comic book writer, artist, screenwriter, and director known for his significant impact on the comic book industry. Miller's work is recognized for introducing a grittier, more mature approach to storytelling in comics, blending film noir and manga influences to create a distinctive visual and narrative style across both print and film.

Miller began his career at Marvel Comics, where he became the official artist for Daredevil. He reimagined the character by elevating Kingpin from a minor Spider-Man villain to a central antagonist and introducing Elektra, a ninja assassin who became a key figure in the series and later starred in standalone stories. This creative direction brought commercial success to Daredevil, establishing the character as one of Marvel's prominent superheroes. Miller later returned to the series with the acclaimed arc "Daredevil: Born Again," which explored the hero's Catholic background and the challenges faced by Matt Murdock, Daredevil's alter ego, at the hands of crime lord Wilson Fisk.

Beyond Daredevil, Miller's influence is evident in "Batman: The Dark Knight Returns," which redefined Batman with a darker, more complex portrayal, influencing the comic-book industry and contributing to the rise of darker characters in superhero comics. The trade paperback edition of "The Dark Knight Returns" remains a consistent seller for DC. Miller also authored "Batman: Year One" and created the series "Ronin," "Sin City," and "300." "Sin City" played a significant role in revitalizing the crime comics genre and earned multiple industry awards, including Harvey Awards for Best Graphic Album of Original Work and Best Continuing Series, as well as Eisner Awards for Best Writer/Artist, Best Graphic Novel Reprint, Best Cartoonist, Best Cover Artist, Best Limited Series, and Best Short Story.

Miller's storytelling extended to film, where he wrote scripts for "RoboCop 2" and "RoboCop 3," co-directed "Sin City" and "Sin City: A Dame to Kill For" with Robert Rodriguez, produced "300," and directed the film adaptation of "The Spirit." The "Sin City" film received critical acclaim, earning a Palme d'Or nomination at the Cannes Film Festival, an Austin Film Critics Award, and a Czech Lion nomination. Miller also served as executive producer on Zack Snyder's "300," based on his graphic novel, which achieved significant box office success. He co-authored the young adult novel "Cursed" with Tom Wheeler, which was adapted into a Netflix series.

Miller has received major comic book industry awards and was inducted into the Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame. A documentary film, Frank Miller: American Genius, explores his career and influence. Miller also launched the comic book publishing company Frank Miller Presents, contributing works such as the Western tale "Sin City 1858."
