Frank Martin

Frank Martin is recognized in college basketball for his ability to rebuild and elevate programs. The son of Cuban political exiles and the first American-born member of his family, Martin began his coaching career in Miami's high school basketball scene. He led Miami Senior High School to three consecutive state championships, coaching teams that included future NBA players Udonis Haslem and Steve Blake. Martin earned a bachelor's degree in physical education from Florida International University while working multiple jobs, reflecting the determination that has shaped his coaching approach.

Martin transitioned to college basketball as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Northeastern University, then joined Bob Huggins' staff at Cincinnati and Kansas State. Following Huggins' resignation at Kansas State, Martin was promoted to head coach. Under his leadership, the Wildcats reached the NCAA Tournament in four of five seasons, including a school-record 29-win campaign and an Elite Eight appearance. He received the Big 12 Conference Coach of the Year Award and became the first head coach in Kansas State history to achieve five consecutive 20-win seasons.

At the University of South Carolina, Martin guided the Gamecocks to a historic NCAA Tournament run, culminating in the program's first Final Four appearance. South Carolina, seeded seventh, defeated Marquette, Duke, Baylor, and Florida to reach the national semifinals. Martin received the Jim Phelan Award, presented annually to the top coach in Division I men's basketball. South Carolina finished the season ranked sixth in the final USA Today Coaches Poll.

Martin was inducted into the Naismith Coaches Circle, an honor from the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame recognizing coaches who have made significant contributions to their communities and the sport. After his tenure at South Carolina, Martin became head coach at the University of Massachusetts, continuing his focus on program development and leadership in college basketball. With more than 350 career wins, Martin is known for his expertise in team building, leadership, and fostering resilience within collegiate athletics.
