Frank Figliuzzi

Frank Figliuzzi is recognized as a national security expert with a 25-year career at the Federal Bureau of Investigation, culminating in his appointment as the Bureau's assistant director for counterintelligence. Figliuzzi joined the FBI as a special agent and served in various locations, including Atlanta, Washington, D.C., San Francisco, Miami, and Cleveland. His early assignments included tracking spies and terrorists during the Democratic National Convention and the Olympic Games. He later served as a supervisory senior resident agent in Silicon Valley, leading efforts to minimize foreign-sponsored thefts of trade secrets.

Following the September 11 attacks, Figliuzzi headed the Joint Terrorism Task Force in Miami, where several of the hijackers had trained, and served as on-scene commander for the FBI's investigation of the anthrax attacks at American Media Inc. in Boca Raton, Florida, directing evidence recovery from the largest HAZMAT crime scene in FBI history.

Figliuzzi was named the FBI's chief inspector by then-Director Robert Mueller, overseeing sensitive and complex internal inquiries and audits worldwide, including reviews of all use of lethal force by FBI agents. As assistant director of the FBI's Counterintelligence Division, Figliuzzi directed all espionage investigations across the U.S. government and frequently briefed the White House, Congress, and the attorney general. Among his notable accomplishments, the FBI released surveillance materials from "Operation Ghost Stories," a decade-long investigation that led to the arrest of 10 Russian sleeper agents and the largest spy swap since the Cold War. As assistant director for counterintelligence, Figliuzzi supervised the declassification and served as FBI spokesperson, describing the network as the "largest network of illegals ever seen in the U.S."

After his FBI service, Figliuzzi joined General Electric as assistant chief security officer for investigations, insider threat, workplace violence prevention, and special event security for GE's global workforce. In this role, he led global investigations focused on insider threat, workplace violence prevention, data and intellectual property protection, and special event security, including the Olympics. This corporate experience broadened his expertise at the intersection of government intelligence and private-sector risk management.

Figliuzzi serves as the senior national security contributor for NBC News and MSNBC, appearing on live broadcasts over 2,000 times. In this capacity, he provides analysis on cybersecurity, terrorism, law enforcement, and legal issues. He is the author of two nonfiction books: "The FBI Way: Inside the Bureau's Code of Excellence," a national bestseller, and "Long Haul: Hunting the Highway Serial Killers." He also hosted the podcast "The Bureau with Frank Figliuzzi" for three seasons.

Figliuzzi earned a Juris Doctorate cum laude from the University of Connecticut School of Law and a Bachelor of Arts degree in English literature from Fairfield University. He has completed the National Security Program for Senior Executives at the Harvard Kennedy School and the Executive Course on Leading Strategic Change at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.
