Fatima Farheen Mirza

Fatima Farheen Mirza is an American novelist recognized for her debut novel, "A Place for Us," which became a New York Times bestseller. Mirza began her academic journey studying medicine at the University of California, Riverside, before shifting her focus to creative writing as an undergraduate. She later graduated from the Iowa Writers' Workshop and received the Michener-Copernicus Fellowship. At Iowa, Mirza developed her craft under the guidance of mentors such as novelist Marilynne Robinson.

"A Place for Us" was the first literary work acquired by Sarah Jessica Parker as editorial director of her imprint, SJP for Hogarth. The novel explores the experiences of an Indian-Muslim family in Northern California, examining themes of tradition, modernity, and identity. The book marked the inaugural publication of SJP for Hogarth and has been translated into seven languages. It received critical acclaim from outlets including the Minneapolis Star Tribune and was selected as a New York "One Book, One New York" pick. The novel was also named one of the best books of the year by the Washington Post, NPR, Refinery29, Buzzfeed, Parade, and Real Simple. Mirza was nominated by author Tommy Orange as an honoree for the National Book Award Foundation's "5 Under 35" list.

In addition to her novel, Mirza has published essays such as "Boxing" in Granta magazine and "Skittles" in "The Good Immigrant." She has taught creative writing at the University of Iowa, Catapult, and New York University, contributing to the development of emerging writers. Mirza frequently addresses topics related to literary craft, representation, and the writing process at public events, including the University of Iowa's Literary Legends series. Through her Substack newsletter, "First Draft," she offers insights into the writing life and the process behind novels, maintaining an active presence in the literary community and ongoing conversations about diversity in literature.
