Eric Yuan

Eric Yuan is a Chinese-American engineer and entrepreneur, known as the founder and CEO of Zoom Communications, a leading video conferencing and collaboration platform. Upon arriving in the United States, Yuan joined WebEx, a web conferencing startup, where he was among the first 20 hires. After WebEx was acquired by Cisco Systems, Yuan became vice president of engineering. He is a named inventor on 11 issued and 20 pending patents in real-time collaboration technology.

In 2011, Yuan proposed a smartphone-friendly video conferencing system to Cisco management. When the idea was rejected, he left Cisco to establish Zoom Communications, focusing on delivering a seamless video environment for teams and organizations. Yuan faced significant challenges in the early days of Zoom, including skepticism from investors in a competitive market. His persistence and vision eventually attracted key investment, enabling the company to grow.

Under Yuan's leadership, Zoom became one of the highest-performing technology IPOs. The platform's features, such as user-friendly presentation tools and virtual backgrounds, contributed to its widespread adoption as remote work and online education increased. Zoom played a significant role in enabling remote collaboration, keeping students learning and families connected during periods of social distancing.

He has also been recognized as the top CEO of a large U.S. company by Glassdoor, EY Entrepreneur of the Year in Northern California in the software category, and has appeared on the Bloomberg 50 and UC Today's UC Leader of the Year. Yuan was elected to the National Academy of Engineering. Following a company-wide layoff, Yuan voluntarily reduced his salary to $10,000 and declined his bonus, demonstrating leadership accountability during financial adjustments.

Yuan is at the forefront of integrating artificial intelligence into the future of work. Zoom Communications has adopted an AI-first vision for hybrid work, focusing on automating tasks, leveraging personal AI assistants, and introducing AI-powered tools such as "Zoom Docs" and "AI Companion."
