Eric Wynalda

Eric Wynalda is recognized as a significant figure in the history of American soccer, known for his contributions as a forward and his influence on the sport's development in the United States. Wynalda played 106 full internationals for the United States and received the U.S. Soccer Player of the Decade Award. He was among the first American players to sign with a German club, 1. FC Saarbrücken, and became the first American to captain a professional team in Europe.

Wynalda's international career included 34 goals in 106 appearances, surpassing Bruce Murray as the U.S. national team's all-time leading goalscorer at the time. He participated in the 1990, 1994, and 1998 World Cups and played in major tournaments such as Copa America, where he scored three goals in five games and was named to the all-tournament team. His free kick goal in the United States' opening match against Switzerland at the 1994 World Cup is regarded as a pivotal moment in American soccer history.

In domestic soccer, Wynalda was one of the first Americans to play professionally in Europe before joining Major League Soccer, where he scored the first goal in league history. He led the league in scoring with 33 points, including 10 goals and 13 assists. Wynalda earned honors such as two-time Honda Player of the Year, USSF Male Player of the Year, and selection to FIFA's CONCACAF Team of the Century. He was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame.

Following his playing career, Wynalda worked as a broadcaster and coach. He served as lead analyst and commentator for ESPN and Fox Sports, covering World Cups, UEFA Champions League Finals, and top European leagues. Wynalda also coached Las Vegas Lights FC in the USL Championship and hosted "WTF: Wynalda Talks Football" on SiriusXM FC. As a coach, he achieved success in the U.S. Open Cup, won the NASL, and recorded the best win/loss coaching record for Las Vegas Lights FC in the United Soccer League. Wynalda continues to contribute to soccer development through the Wynalda Soccer Academy, focusing on player development and advancing the sport in the United States.
