Born in September 1992 Emiliano “El chaqueño” Grillo always had a great love of sport. Growing up in Resistencia in Argentina he was of course submersed from a young age into a football mad culture. A fan of Buenos Aires based powerhouse River Plate he is always tuned into events at home and tries to visit River’s home stadium “El Monumental” when his busy schedule permits. In addition to football as his main hobby outside of golf Emiliano is also an avid angler who likes to unwind at the side of whatever river or lake he can find during his time off.
Throughout his early years Emi soon found the sport of golf and quickly became obsessed and fully consumed by it. Aged 14 a young and enthusiastic Emiliano regularly travelled to Buenos Aires looking to train with the best golfers in the country and was soon taken into the Argentine Association of Golf where he began to hone his skills. Here he began to work on perfecting all of the skills of the game which are now seen regularly on the PGA Tour.As a member of the AAG he began to represent his home country in many junior championships , winning numerous titles among which was the internationally renowned junior golf championship “Optimist International”.
From here, “Emi” started out on his own individual journey and with a solid support structure set about reaching his ultimate goal of becoming a professional. In 2009 he won the title at the Callaway Junior World Golf Championships which was to be his most prestigious amateur title. At this point Emiliano knew a move from Argentina to the United States was imperative in order to continue his progression and with that he moved to join the Leadbetter Academy. From there he represented the AAG in the world championships played in Argentina in 2010 and won numerous junior honours including the “Copa Pereyra Iraola” (best player to participate in the Argentine Open).
In 2011 Emi took the biggest step of his golfing career by turning professional aged 19. Deciding to try the European Tour Qualifying School Emiliano had immediate success by securing his European Tour Card for that year. Now facing into a full season the one of the world’s elite tours Emiliano stated “Playing in Europe in my first year as a professional is a bonus but my main objective is to play on the PGA Tour”. In his first event he managed a Top 10 in the African Open and went on to secure two more top 10 finishes, one of which a top 5 and he broke into the European Tour Top 100 at 91st position.
In February 2014, Emiliano had his best finish to date on the European Tour, when he finished runner-up behind Stephen Gallacher at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic. Later in the season he finished 8th at the BMW International Open and the BMW Masters, and 11th at the Turkish Airlines Open. He ended 44th on the European Tour Race to Dubai. He also won the Visa Open de Argentina on the PGA Tour Latinoamérica.
Emiliano began the 2015 European Tour season very strongly with a third place at the Volvo China Open, a fifth place at the Qatar Masters, a sixth place at the Open de España and an 11th place at the Shenzhen International.
He lost in a five-man playoff at the Puerto Rico Open on the PGA Tour, playing on a sponsor's exemption, and finished tenth at the Barbasol Championship. In just seven starts, he earned enough to qualify for the 2015 Web.com Tour Finals. He claimed a ninth place at the Hotel Fitness Championship, a runner-up at the Small Business Connection Championship and a first place at theWeb.com Tour Championship. Therefore he finished second at the Finals money list and fulfilled his lifelong ambition by gaining a card for the 2016 PGA Tour. Since he only played in seven events during the 2014–15 season, he was still considered a rookie for the 2015–16 season quickly being installed as a favourite for the Rookie of the Year title.
In his eighth career PGA Tour event and first as a member, Emiliano won the season-opening Frys.com Open, after beating veteran Kevin Na in a sudden-death playoff. He made a 25-foot birdie putt on the 72nd hole for a 3-under-par 69, which was later tied by Na. Emiliano then missed a three-foot putt for victory on the first playoff hole, but sealed the win on the second hole with a birdie after Na ended up behind a tree and could only make bogey. The victory sees Emi gain entry to the Masters and the 2016 PGA Championship.
After moving to a then career high 36th Emiliano qualified for the WGC HSCB Champions event in Shanghai followed by the BMW Masters. Two solid finsishes in each event seured his top 60 Race to Dubai position and with it a place at the season finale DP World Tour Championship in Dubai. An excellent week in Dubai saw him capture fourth place and an overall ranking of 40th in the Race to Dubai standings while also seeing him move to a career high of 34th in the world rankings.
To cap off an excellent debut full season on the PGA Tour Emiliano was announced as PGA Tour Rookie of the Year for 2015/16. A well-deserved award for a season which saw him capture his maiden tour victory and put in a host of stellar performances throughout, while reaching a career high of no.24 in the Official World Golf Rankings.
Emiliano has opened the 2016/17 in positive fashion with a 26th place finish at the Safeway Open and followed this up with an improved 17th place at the CIMB Classic in Kuala Lumpur. In his third outing of the season Emiliano put in an impressive display finishing 11th in the WGC HSBC Champions in Shanghai, China.
Continuing his impressive form Emiliano recorded his highest finish of the new season with 10th place at the OHL Classic at Mayakoba which also saw him rise toa new career high world ranking of no.23.
