Elvis Costello

Elvis Costello is a singer, songwriter, record producer, author, and television host whose career in rock music has spanned more than five decades. Costello is recognized for reinvigorating the literate, lyrical traditions of artists such as Bob Dylan and Van Morrison, blending them with the raw energy and attitude characteristic of punk. His songwriting is noted for densely layered wordplay and an ever-expanding repertoire of musical styles.

Initially known for his sharp, often political lyrics, Costello expanded his work into genres including country and jazz. He gained prominence with his debut album, "My Aim Is True," which combined the energy of punk with sophisticated songwriting and included tracks such as "Less Than Zero" and "Welcome to the Working Week." The album received critical acclaim, earning the title of album of the year in the Rolling Stone critics' poll, and Costello was later named songwriter of the year in the same poll. He continued to release a series of acclaimed albums with his band the Attractions, including "This Year's Model," "Armed Forces," and "Imperial Bedroom."

Costello has composed and written lyrics for more than 600 published titles, collaborating with artists such as Paul McCartney, Allen Toussaint, the Brodsky Quartet, T Bone Burnett, and Diana Krall. His partnership with Burt Bacharach produced the album "Painted from Memory," and his experimental works include the song cycle "The Juliet Letters" with a string quartet. The single "I Still Have That Other Girl" from "Painted from Memory" earned a Grammy Award. Costello is a two-time Grammy Award winner, recognized for both his collaborations and solo work, including the album "Look Now."

He is the author of the memoir "Unfaithful Music & Disappearing Ink," the composer of two ballet scores, and the writer of songs for motion pictures, including "The Scarlet Tide," which was nominated for an Academy Award for the film "Cold Mountain." Costello's accolades include two Grammy Awards, two Ivor Novello Awards, induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame, a BAFTA award for his work on the drama serial "GBH," two Dutch Edison Awards, and a VMA Award for "Veronica." He was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire for services to music.

Costello has continued to explore new creative projects, including a scripted comedy audio series on Audible with T Bone Burnett as the Coward Brothers, featuring guest appearances by Harry Shearer, Rhea Seehorn, and Stephen Root, with an accompanying soundtrack album. He has performed in symphony halls with orchestras worldwide, including those in San Francisco, Chicago, Sydney, Tokyo, and with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, demonstrating his versatility and influence within the music industry.
