Elizabeth Shuler

Elizabeth Shuler is President of the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO), the largest federation of labor unions in the United States, representing more than 12 million working people. She is the first woman to lead the organization in its more than 65-year history.

A longtime advocate for workers’ rights, Shuler has focused her leadership on strengthening worker power, expanding union membership, and ensuring that the transition to a clean energy economy creates high-quality union jobs. She has been a prominent voice on issues including collective bargaining, workplace safety, economic equity, and the future of work in a rapidly changing global economy.

Before becoming president in 2021, Shuler served for more than a decade as Secretary-Treasurer of the AFL-CIO, where she was the federation’s chief financial officer and a leading architect of its strategic initiatives. Earlier in her career, she held senior roles at the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), where she worked extensively on public policy and workforce development in the energy and construction sectors.

Shuler serves on a number of national advisory boards focused on economic policy, labor standards, and workforce development. Through her leadership, she continues to advocate for policies that raise wages, protect workers’ rights, and ensure that economic growth is broadly shared.
