Elizabeth Nyamwange

Elizabeth Nyamwange is a Kenyan-American technologist, developer, researcher, and gender-equality activist recognized for inventing "Etana," a blockchain-powered device designed to address the global identification crisis. "Etana" leverages blockchain technology to provide identification for women, climate migrants, and refugees in low-infrastructure environments. The solar-powered device converts a physical fingerprint into a mathematical algorithm stored on a private blockchain server, enabling users to create biometric digital identification without relying on internet access or electricity. This approach increases accessibility for women in remote regions.

Nyamwange's motivation for developing "Etana" began after observing women in Kenya unable to make purchases due to a lack of bank accounts. She started planning the project at age 14, writing the computer code over a four-month period. She acquired a 3D printer and secured more than $60,000 in funding to support development. Nyamwange initially faced challenges raising funds due to her age, which strengthened her determination to advance the project.

Nyamwange has collaborated with companies such as Safaricom and Visa. She has received the Pozen Social Innovation Prize, HP Girls Save the World Prize, and MIT Solved Youth Award, and her work has been featured in Yahoo Business, Afrotech, Forbes, and TechCrunch. Through the Solved Youth Innovation Challenge, she received a total of $36,000 for "Etana." Her achievements include recognition as a W.E.B. Du Bois Scholar and serving as a judge at MIT Solve, an initiative focused on fostering social impact and innovation.

Nyamwange serves as a youth advisor to the United Nations and has research interests at the intersection of gender and technology. She has spoken at the United Nations General Assembly, U.S. Chamber of Commerce Women's Day Forum, and UNESCO's Transforming Education Summit. Nyamwange conducts research at Brigham and Women's Hospital with Harvard Medical School, with experience in computational sociology and data science. Her expertise spans blockchain, STEM equity, and women's empowerment, combining technical innovation with social impact.
