Edward I. Altman is recognized as a leading authority in finance, specializing in corporate bankruptcy, credit risk, and distressed debt markets. Altman holds the title of Max L. Heine Professor of Finance Emeritus at New York University's Stern School of Business and serves as director of the Credit and Fixed Income Research Program at the NYU Salomon Center. He earned his MBA and Ph.D. from UCLA after graduating from CCNY, and has contributed significantly to the fields of credit risk assessment and financial modeling.
Altman is best known for developing the Altman Z-score, a quantitative model for predicting bankruptcy and assessing credit risk. His work includes the introduction of the Z-score, Zeta analysis, and Emerging Market Scoring, all of which have become foundational tools in bankruptcy prediction and credit analysis. The Z-score model is widely used by financial professionals and academics to evaluate a company's probability of default. Altman's research has been extensively cited, including in the development of J.P. Morgan's CreditMetrics model.
He has authored or edited nearly two dozen books and more than 100 scholarly articles in finance, accounting, and economics. His book, "Corporate Financial Distress, Restructuring, and Bankruptcy," is regarded as a comprehensive resource on restructuring practices, distressed debt, high yield bond and loan markets, credit analysis, and default prediction. Altman's publications have been translated into several languages, reflecting his influence in global finance and risk management.
Altman previously chaired the Stern School's MBA Program for 12 years and has held visiting professorships at institutions including Hautes Etudes Commerciales and Universite de Paris-Dauphine in France, Pontificia Catolica Universidade in Rio de Janeiro, Australian Graduate School of Management and Macquarie in Sydney, University of Western Australia in Perth, Luigi Bocconi University in Milan, and CEMFI in Madrid. He has received multiple awards for his research, served as an advisor to government agencies and foreign central banks, and provided testimony before the U.S. Congress and other regulatory bodies.
Altman has been honored by the Hautes Études Commerciales Foundation in Paris for his work on corporate distress prediction models and financial rehabilitation procedures, and received the Graham & Dodd Scroll from the Financial Analysts Federation for research on default rates and high yield corporate debt. He has been inducted into the Fixed Income Analysts Society Hall of Fame, served as president of the Financial Management Association, and was among the inaugural inductees into the Turnaround Management Association Hall of Fame. Altman has been named one of the "100 Most Influential People in Finance" by Treasury & Risk Management magazine and is frequently cited in financial media and on broadcast news channels.
